Gateway Search Dogs Newsletter 2010
Missouri Search and Rescue Organization
This newsletter provides updated information on our recent activities and certifications. Gateway Search Dogs (GSD) is a volunteer canine search and rescue unit with members in St. Louis City, St. Charles Co., St. Louis Co, Jefferson Co, and Franklin Co. We provide nationally certified personnel and canine teams to search for missing persons, alive or deceased, 24/7. Our membership has increased to 14 in 2010 and we have increased our canines (operational and in-training) to 9.
Certifications
Our canine teams are certified by:
-
North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA)
-
National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR)
-
National Narcotic Detector Dog Association (NNDDA)
We believe that outside certifications from national organizations eliminates potential for internal bias when testing.
Training
GSD members train weekly, as a unit, and, individually, throughout the week. Formal search and rescue training obtained by our members includes, but is not limited to, classes and seminars in:
Incident Command System NIMS First Aid and CPR
Map and Compass/GPS CERT Blood Borne Pathogens
Crime Scene Preservation Hazmat Clue Finding
Wilderness Survival Water Search Lost Person Behavior
Man Tracking Radio Communication Disaster
Scent Theory Area Search First Responder
HRD (cadaver) Helicopter Safety Building Search
Types of Canine Search Teams
Area search dog teams
Our dogs are trained to find live subjects and evidence in both wilderness and urban environments.
Trailing teams
Trailing dogs are trained to follow the scent trail left by the passage of a person through an area. Under ideal conditions, the trail can be followed by the canine team up to several days after the trail is made.
Land cadaver (human remains detection) teams
Our cadaver dogs are trained to find human remains buried in graves or lying on or above the ground’s surface.
Water cadaver teams
Water cadaver dogs are trained to find the scent of human remains that are under water in rivers and lakes. In 2008, our cadaver dog team indicated the area where divers found the body of a man who had drowned in the Missouri River.
